Many pulsars sport gamma-ray belts

Read more: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16375?DCMP=youtube A new class of gamma-ray-only pulsars shows that the gamma rays must form in a broader region than the lighthouse-like radio beam. In this animation, the pulsar's radio beams (green) never intersect Earth, but its pulsed gamma rays (magenta) do. (Courtesy of NASA/Fermi/Cruz deWilde)

New animation lets you fly through a supernova remnant

Read more: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16369?DCMP=youtube This stunning visualisation of Cassiopeia A, the result of an explosion approximately 330 years ago, uses X-ray data from Chandra, infrared data from Spitzer and pre-existing optical data from NOAO's 4-m telescope at Kitt Peak and the Michigan-Dartmouth-MIT 2.4-m telescope. The neutron star left over from the stellar blast is an artist's illustration (Courtesy NASA/CXC/D Berry; Model: NASA/CXC/MIT/T Delaney et al.)

Supernova's ghost caught expanding in new video

Read more: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16369?DCMP=youtube This new movie of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A was made by combining Chandra X-ray satellite observations taken in January 2000, February 2002, February 2004 and December 2007. The debris is expanding more slowly than expected, probably because the energy of the explosion is being used to magnetically accelerate particles, turning them into cosmic rays (Courtesy of NASA/CXC/SAO/D Patnaude et al.)

Stars observed orbiting Milky Way's heart in best detail yet

Read more: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn16247?DCMP=youtube Sixteen years of observations of stars around the galactic centre are assembled in this video. The real motion of the stars has been accelerated by a factor 32 million. The individual images have been shifted and stretched to the same scale and orientation (Courtesy of ESO/R Genzel and S Gillessen)
